It’s spring cleaning season. While you’re tidying up, why not use it as a chance to make some money? A garage/yard sale is a great way to do that. Here are some tips on how to make the most out of a garage sale.
Check Your Local Laws
Depending on your local laws, you might need a permit for your garage sale. Before you get your stuff together to sell, check your local city’s guidance on the sales.
Timing Matters
The best day to do your yard sale is on the weekend. More people are off work than on a weekday, so that means more customers for you. You should also plan on getting started early, like 7 am. Once again, this gives people more time to browse and buy.
Payment Plan
Decide how people will pay for your items. Cash? Venmo? Whatever you decide you should mention the payment method on your ads.
Advertise
Speaking of ads, consider taking out space in your local newspaper. You could also post ads on Facebook if you’re part of a local group. When the day comes to have your sale, place outdoor ads in clear, high-traffic areas.
Have Fun
If you’re having fun, customers might stay longer and buy more. Play some good music. If you have kids, have them set up a lemonade stand. Offer free coffee and donuts. Just remember to keep your spending in check, you don’t want to spend so much on the garage sale that you don’t end up turning a profit.
