Sprout Savings Account 101

Designed for ages 12 and younger, a Sprout Savings account is a safe, secure spot for young savers to store away their allowance, gifts, and other earnings, then watch their savings grow with dividends. Together, you can build healthy saving habits from day one.

Savings to grow on.
A Sprout Savings account is easy and fun to maintain. With just $5 and a little curiosity, your child can open a Sprout Savings account and start working toward small (and big) goals of their own. We always waive membership fees for Sprout savers, but do ask that a guardian help activate and serve as custodian of the account.

Sprout Savings Account Rate

*APY = Annual Percentage Yield. APY is accurate as of the last dividend declaration date.

Sprout Savings Account Benefits

FAQs

Is my child eligible to open a Sprout Savings account?

+

If your child is 12 years old or younger, they are eligible to open a Sprout Savings Account.

Can only parents open a Sprout Saving account for their children?

+

Any legal guardian can open a Sprout Savings account for their little one.

What happens to my child’s Sprout Saving Account when they turn 13?

+

A Sprout Savings account stays a Sprout Savings account for life. This means that when your child turns 13, the account stays exactly the same and will remain open for as long as the parent or guardian would like. When you believe your kids are ready for a Flex Savings and Checking account, you can make an appointment at your local branch or video chat with us to close your current Sprout Savings account, and move those savings over to a Flex Savings account.

All families are different and the right time to give your kids this new responsibility is totally up to you. We're just here to help you and your family build those good, healthy savings habits.

Can I set up automatic transfers to a Sprout Savings account?

+

Yes! We make depositing in this account easy. Simply let one of our team members know that you would like to do this when you open your Sprout Account or do it yourself in our Online Banking Portal. You can transfer to and from other Fortera accounts and accounts at other banks and credit unions. To get started, just click on the Transfer Money tab.

What are dividends and how do they work for the Sprout Savings account?

+

Dividends are extra money that your account earns just by being open and meeting our minimum account dividend earning value. The Sprout Savings account earns dividends quarterly as long as your account has at least $25 deposited in it. It is just another way we like to say thank you to our members for trusting us with your hard-earned "dough". To learn more about what the current dividend rate is and our other savings accounts that earn dividends, please see our Rate and Fee Disclosure.

Can I open a Sprout Savings account online or do I need to open it at a branch location?

+

For the safety and security of our youngest members, we do ask that you schedule an appointment or video call us to open this account.

Fraud, unfortunately, is made easier when an account holder has fewer identifying documents and since we can safely assume your children do not yet have a driver's license, we do ask that you schedule an appointment or video call us so that we can verify both parties' identities. Thank you for your understanding.

What documents do I need to open a Sprout Savings account?

+

We will require at least one official document to verify your child's identity. We can use a variety of documents, including social security cards, birth certificates, Medicaid cards, and insurance cards.

To verify your identity, we always ask that you come prepared with a government-issued ID. It is important that it is not expired. Examples of acceptable IDs include a State Driver's License or a U.S. or Foreign Passport.

If we have trouble validating your ID, we may ask for a secondary ID.

If you have a question about whether an ID can be used, text us at 931.431.6800 or chat with us on our website. We will be happy to review your documents for you in advance.
