Once summer is in sight, most of us are itching to be in the great outdoors. The good news is that you don’t have to go far to get off the grid thanks to all the gorgeous escapes in Tennessee and Kentucky.
So — where to? It’s up to you. Here are some of our favorite getaways in the Volunteer and Bluegrass States that might spark your sense of adventure, starting with some campgrounds and ATV parks to the east.
East Tennessee & Kentucky Getaways
Anchor Down RV Resort - Dandridge, TN
Not exactly roughing it, this campsite offers gorgeous mountain and lake views and all the luxuries to keep you comfy as you and your family escape into nature. Previous campers rave about Anchor Down’s friendly staff and sparkling bathrooms, and, if you plan far enough ahead, you might be lucky enough to nab a site with a fireplace.
Roan Mountain State Park - Roan Mountain, TN
Get off the grid into the glorious hardwood forests at Roan Mountain State Park. Enjoy 12-miles worth of hiking trails, trout fishing, or, during the winter months, cross country skiing. Pull up in your RV and bring your mountain bikes along (Psst: Your own RV loan could be your ticket to snagging new bikes for the whole family) to traverse the park’s 2.25 miles of trails reserved just for biking.
Watauga Dam Tailwater - Elizabethton, TN
Established in the 1950s, this lovely dam is surrounded by lush areas perfect for picnicking, launching your boat, and casting your line. Settled in the Appalachian Trail and Cherokee National Forest, you can enjoy beautiful lake views and explore the nearby woods. And, thanks to this campsite’s high elevation, you can expect some temperature relief in the hotter summer months.
Fall Creek Falls State Park - Spencer, TN
Expansive and beloved, Fall Creek Falls State Park offers nearly 30,000 acres of land to hike, explore, and revel in. With varied terrain including gorges, streams, hardwood forests, and — of course — massive waterfalls, this park has a little something for everyone. Enjoy (56-miles worth of) hikes ranging from easy strolls to rugged overnight treks and be sure to stop by Fall Creek Falls, one of the eastern USA's highest waterfalls at a staggering 256 feet.
Corbin / Laurel Lake KOA - Corbin, KY
The closest KOA (Kampgrounds of America) to Cumberland Falls State Park, Corbin / Laurel Lake is the place to camp if you’ve been itching to see the famous “moonbow.” This campground is a hilltop shaded with trees and featuring amenities that will allow the whole family to camp in comfort. Find some adventure in the surrounding biking trails or relax by the pool.
